To assist young and not-so-young females with their complexions, Charles Blanc included some helpful instructions on the proper application of coloured parasols. In his opinion, ideal shades included rose de chine or carnation silk, while anything purple, red or brown was to be absolutely avoided. Blanc advised women to resist the temptation of matching their parasol fabric to their dress if the dress were an unflattering colour for the complexion: “A pretty woman will never sacrifice her beauty, even to the rules of optical harmony.”

By the earliest decades of the twentieth century parasol fashion had reached new heights of flashy absurdity. Fashion houses and individuals alike created ever more fantastic and eye-catching concoctions—so eye-catching, in fact, that it was the unspoken rule at polo matches to hide the parasols at start of play, so as not to spook the horses with the array of ribbons, feathers and bright colours on display. In 1922, the dog parasol became popular. Originally the term simply referred to parasols with elaborately carved dog-headed handles—but when the Pekingese and French Bulldog clubs exhibited at the Horticultural Hall that year, miniature parasols were produced to shelter the pedigree hounds.22 By this time, however, the parasol’s popularity had reached its zenith. The emerging mania for sun bathing and tanned skin ensured that the parasol quickly became outmoded.
